Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, written in 1972, is the sequel to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. There was actually meant to be a third installment to the series, but unfortunately Dahl passed away before he could complete it. The book carries on from where the first book leaves off; with Charlie, his family, and Willy Wonka just getting into the elevator in Charlie's house.
However, the second book was never made into a movie because Roald Dahl was so unhappy with the first movie, that he refused to let Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator be adapted into a movie during his lifetime. When Tim Burton was asked if he would ever consider making a movie for Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, he responded "[n]o, and you can count on that from me."
