Roald Dahl was born September 13, 1916 and died on November 23, 1990. He is a renowned Welsh author most famously known for his numerous children's books (although he has written a number of other works in the categories of adult fiction, film scripts, television shows, and non-fiction works). A total of seven of his children's books have been made into movies (including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory). He was never able to use a typewriter, so all of his work was written and edited by him in his own longhand. During the Second World War, Dahl was an officer the British Army, and then became a pilot in the Royal Air Force and crash landed in the African Desert after realizing he would run out of fuel before finding runway. Influences from his time growing up, especially during his time in the British school system and while living in Africa, are both prevalent in his writing.

A Roald Dahl Museum was opened in Buckinghamshire, UK in 1996. It has been a registered charity since 2001 and is family oriented. Here, Roald Dahl and his work are showcased and along with craft activities and story times for children.
